Dr. Charles N. Smith was born in Petersburg, Virginia where he attended public school and graduated from Petersburg High School. He earned a Bachelor Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling both from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. In addition, he earned the Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from Virginia Polytechnic and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Dr. Smith is currently Dean of Community Engagement and Grants at Trenholm State Community College. He is an experience college and university administrator and author. He has held several administrative positions at several different institutions of higher education. These include serving as: Vice President for Student Services at Jarvis Christian College, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Tuskegee University, Chief of Staff and Interim Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Wiley College, Vice President for Student Affairs at Jackson State University, Vice President for Student Affairs at Alabama State University, Vice President for Student Affairs at South Carolina State University, Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs at Delaware State University, Vice President and Director of Athletics at Chicago State University, Special Assistant to the Provost at George Mason University, Director of Special Services and Assistant Professor of Psychology at Gulf Coast Community College and a College Counselor at Saint Paul’s College, and a Drug and Alcohol counselor at Jump Start Substance Abuse Center.
Dr. Smith is currently Vice President of the Greater Montgomery Chapter of 100 Black Men of American and has served as CEO and Program Chair. He a member of Omega Psi Phi, Sigma Phi Chapter, and a current member of the CIC Leadership Academy. He is also a Kellogg Leader Fellow, Executive Leadership Academy Fellow, and a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education Leadership Program (IEM), Executive Leadership Academy Fellow, and Millennial Leadership Institute Fellow.
Dr. Smith has received several awards from national organization, colleges, and universities for his work with students, higher education administration and for serving on local, state and local committees and organization. He has been named several times “Who is Who In America Higher Education. He has authored several papers, articles, and made presentations at both the state and national level.
Dr. Smith is the author of five books: On The Sideline Or In The Game, published in 2002 by Cherokee Books; A Funeral, A Wedding and The Journey Between, published in 2005 by Ivy House Publishing Group; The Last Shall Be The First, published in 2008 by Outskirt Press; This Morning My Father Died…So What, published in 2011 by Dorrance Publishing Company, and Diversity: A Realty for America, Racism Still Its Nightmare, published by Page Publishing of New York in 2018.
