Following a career as a scientist in the Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, and as Assistant Director of the Medical Effectiveness Research Center for Diverse Populations, University of California at San Francisco, Mark Alexander has
committed the next chapter in his life to health equity. Dr. Alexander has a strong commitment to improving the health outcomes of marginalized communities, particularly those affected by racism.
Dr. Alexander has been a member of the 100 Black Men of the Bay Area for over 28 years, and served three terms as chairman of its board of directors. He was in the inaugural class of Lifetime Members of 100 Black Men of America, and is currently the 100’s National Secretary, a position that he has served for the past 11 years. Additionally, Dr. Alexander is the Chair of the 100’s Health and Wellness Committee. In that capacity he represents the 100 on the Council on Black Health, a coalition of national Black organizations that address
issues that impact the health of Black communities.
Dr. Alexander’s dedication to improving health outcomes extends to his work with community organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is currently the Executive Director of Youth Movement, a community-based initiative dedicated to improving the health, fitness and well-being of Black children.
Dr. Alexander earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Nairobi,Kenya, East Africa. He then went on to earn his Master Degree in Public Health, and Doctorate in Epidemiology from the University of
California, Berkeley.
Dr. Alexander and his wife, Olivia, live in Oakland, California and are the proud parents of four children and seven grandchildren
